Is this Desktop good value for Money?
DELL STUDIO XPS
I am getting it primarily for gaming purposes (Grid,ETW ect.) but also want it to last a long time. It costs exactly 1,000$.
the specs are:
Intel Core i7 2.66Ghz
6gb Ram 1066Mhz (3x2gb)
750GB HDD @7200rpm/3.0gb/s
Dual DVDrw disk drives
ATI Radeon HD4850 XT 512mb
+ 3 years XPS premier service & warranty
Most importantly, is the graphics card good???, or how better is the HD 4870 (not XT version)/
The short-answer is no. Dell Desktops are overpriced, just as this one is.
That is the Intel I7 920, which is the cheapest i7 out (around $230)
6GB of RAM isn’t very expensive, around $80.
The HDD is decent, but is only around $70
The two DVD burners would cost around $55
The video card they give you is the low-end model, but is around $150
Now lets figure in the other items; Case & Power supply, (Dell’s are terrible) but figure around $100 for a superb case with all the trimmings. (Power supply, LED Fans, cables, etc.)
Their warranty is garbage, so who cares.
Now factor in a keyboard & mouse: $30
If you want a monitor: $150
In other-words, if you would like me to guide you step-by-step, you could build a tower that is around $700 and is 2 times better than this.
Even with a monitor, keyboard, and mouse, you are looking at well under $1000.
Now if you don’t want to build a desktop, you can buy this Dell, it will be okay for you. I’m just not a big Dell fan after dealing with peoples Dell systems that die due to overheating and poor design.
Oh, and for your second question, the HD 4870 isn’t unbelievably more powerful than the 4850, the big difference that you may find is the VRAM difference (512 compared to 1 to 2GB). This will not effect performance initially, but may become an issue down the road.
